I gotta say, I'm kinda miffed about "Toy Story 3" being up for Best Picture. Don't get me wrong, I love seeing animated films break out of the stupid Best Animated Feature ghetto and run with the big boys. But this pretty much guarantees that TS3 will have to get the Animated prize, and that means "How To Train Your Dragon" will get the shaft.

And yeah, I'll say it...I thought "Dragon" was the better movie. They're both really good movies, but...well, they're two of The Pie's favorite movies. I saw "Dragon" every day for a straight month, and after Christmas, I saw TS3 every day for a straight month. If I had to choose one of them to watch right now, I'd choose "Dragon" in a heartbeat. And, while Pixar is, without a doubt, the gold standard studio of computer-animation quality...nothing in TS3 made me go "HOSHIT THAT LOOKS BADASS" like some of the shots in "Dragon".

(A part of this is also that I want to see Chris Sanders and Dean DeBlois recognized for being the crazy geniuses that they are, and I want some love for a DreamWorks animated film that isn't a mess of cheap animation, crude humor, and pop-culture references that fall flat in five years. Positive reinforcement!)

Oh well. I can still pull for "Dragon" to get the (entirely deserved) Best Score.

In other news, why is it that, after I sell my easel, I get the desire to paint again? I may have to look into water-mixable oils, though - the works-in-progress sitting on my craft table have only reminded me that I hate acrylics. :/
